We enjoy keeping chickens in the Animal Zone. In spring 2015 we hatched our own chicks in collaboration with Living Eggs. We have also recently adopted a brood of chicks from Dilkes Primary Academy.

Children have been able to watch the chicks grow from tiny little fluffy things in an incubator to fully grown hens in a specially designed pen. They are now housed outside in a chicken coop in our Animal Zone.

The chickens are let out of their coop to wander around the Animal Zone every day. Most days this is done by a number of Year 5 pupils who also collect the eggs.

The coop is cleared out by our Animal Care Assistant once a week and all the chickens are regularly checked over for any signs of illness or injury.
